Upstairs: A Cool and Friendly Display Font for Creative Projects

As I opened a new brand board for a local café, I felt the familiar thrill of starting a fresh branding project. The café, known for its cozy ambiance and artisanal coffee, needed a visual identity that would reflect its unique charm. I decided to test Upstairs, a cool but friendly display font, to see how it would fit into the design.

First Impressions: Upstairs in a Logo Concept

The first thing I noticed about Upstairs was its natural and unique style. It has a playful yet sophisticated feel, making it perfect for a café that prides itself on both quality and creativity. I started by incorporating Upstairs into a logo concept. The font's smooth curves and balanced weight made it stand out, giving the logo a modern and inviting look. The café’s name, “Brew & Beans,” looked fantastic in Upstairs, with each letter flowing seamlessly into the next.

Upstairs in Brand Identity: Consistency and Personality

Next, I explored how Upstairs could be used across different elements of the brand identity. I created a brand board, including business cards, packaging mockups, and social media graphics. Upstairs maintained its strong personality throughout, providing a consistent and recognizable visual language. The font's readability at larger sizes made it ideal for headers and short phrases, such as menu titles and social media posts.

Web Design and Digital Presence

I then moved on to designing the café’s website. Upstairs proved to be a versatile choice for the homepage hero section and key headings. The font's unique style set the tone for the site, making it feel welcoming and modern. However, I did notice that using Upstairs for longer body text or smaller sizes could be challenging, as it might reduce readability. For these sections, I paired Upstairs with a clean sans serif font, ensuring a balanced and user-friendly experience.

Font Pairing and Practical Advice

When it comes to font pairing, Upstairs works well with both serif and sans serif fonts. For the café project, I chose a simple sans serif like Roboto for body text and a classic serif like Merriweather for more formal sections. This combination allowed Upstairs to shine as a headline and accent font, while the supporting fonts provided clarity and professionalism.

Before finalizing any client work, it’s always a good idea to test the font in various contexts. Print out some samples, see how it looks on a shop sign, and get feedback from others. Additionally, make sure to check the commercial licensing terms to ensure you can use Upstairs in all intended applications, such as branding, packaging, and digital products.

Final Thoughts on Upstairs

Overall, Upstairs is a fantastic addition to any designer's toolkit. Its cool and friendly style makes it suitable for a wide range of creative projects, from café branding to product packaging and social media graphics. While it may not be the best choice for long-form text or highly formal designs, its unique personality and versatility make it a standout option for creating engaging and memorable visuals.
